CAPT 2011- Staples Students Turn in Impressive Results on 2011 CAPT
Test scores improve over last year in every category at the state's "goal" level
Scores on the Connecticut Academic Performance Test rose across the board at Staples High School this year, according to results released Tuesday by state education officials.
The CAPT, administered each year to some 40,000 tenth graders statewide, consists of eight hours of multiple choice and free response questions on math, science, reading, and writing. Students who fail to score at or above the state-mandated proficiency level are required to retest in grades 11 and/or 12.
As in past years, results from Westport's test-takers were considerably stronger than those of the state as a whole. But more notable were the improvements seen in nearly every category over last year's results at the “goal” level.
The state delivers a full data set to each district, which includes individual student scores and other subsets of results.
In Math, 90.2 percent of Staples students scored at or above goal (up less than 1 percent) and 97.2 percent at or above proficiency (no change from last year). State scores also rose in math, but by smaller margins.
In Science, 79 percent of Staples students scored at or above goal (up about 2.5 percent) and 97.6 percent at or above proficiency (down about 1 percent). State scores also rose in science, but once again by smaller margins.
In Reading, 87.3 percent of Staples students scored at or above goal (up about 1 percent) and 99.6 percent at or above proficiency (up about 1 percent). State scores, meanwhile, went down slightly.
And in writing, 91.5 percent of Staples students scored at or above goal (up about 2 percent) and 99.3 percent at or above proficiency (up about 1 percent). State writing scores rose by similar or slightly higher margins.
Compared to other towns in District Reference Group A — a state-designated cluster of districts with similar socioeconomic characteristics — Staples’ results were mixed.
