Box Office Results 2011: Nobody Puts Harry Potter in the Corner
Part of looking at movies does involve the business side of show business. We try to have a little fun with it, as each week Tim makes his predictions as to how movies will perform at the Box Office. Then, on Sundays, we look at how Tim’s predictions fared.
When Tim made his box office predictions earlier this week, I don’t think even he expected Harry Potter to be the behemoth it’s turned out to be. Shattering records, Harry Potter was the last, best hope for a movie to break the $100 million mark. Instead, it’s done so much more then that, breaking records for biggest opening day and biggest weekend, and smashing the amount Tim had considered for his estimate. So, how else did Tim’s predictions do this week?
As I said, Harry Potter is ridiculous in how well it’s done at the box office. Breaking records and Tim’s expectations, you know there’s a studio head somewhere weeping that it’s the last of the franchise, trying to figure out if it’s too soon to reboot the whole thing with new kids attached.
As for the rest of Tim’s predictions, despite positive reviews, Disney’s Winnie the Pooh movie just didn’t do as well as expected, falling outside of the top five, coming in at 6th place with an even $8 million. That threw off Tim’s predictions a little, as did the re-emergence of Cars 2 into the top 5 - listen to this week’s podcast and you’ll even hear Tim sound a little incredulous that the Cars sequel outplayed the better-reviewed Pooh movie.
We’re back into super-heroes this week with Captain America: The First Avenger. Marvel’s had a pretty good record this summer and Cap is one of their more recognizable figures (compared to Thor, at least) so it’ll be curious to see how it does in the shadow of the boy wizard. How does Tim think that altercation will play out? We’ll see in this week’s predictions, as Tim Takes on the Box Office.
